Tried a couple of activities with both year 7 and year 9 classes of lower achievement standard. I liked the activities and had some buy-in from the students, although late in the term was a little hit and miss. Anyhow, working with negatives and having some ideas for activities is something I was keen on as both classes had struggled with this concept during regular class activities. So… here they both are:
- Integer Solitaire activity – using deck of cards to make true statements with positive/negative numbers.
- Integers misconceptions – “always, sometimes, never” activity (I didn’t feel I led the discussion well, but that being said there were some great conversations that came out of this one! just that some were off task!!) Note website here is the source I got it from, they link it to someone else.
- Later found another integer activity on Desmos to add to this list, particularly if students have access to devices. And also this one.
- This number line calculator on Desmos may also be helpful in helping students practice with negative numbers, adding and subtracting etc.
